4 AM Alarms and Family Long Runs: How George Abela Logged 670 km to Claim a Podium Spot

Every January, millions of people jump into new fitness resolutions with fiery enthusiasm. By late February, most of those resolutions have quietly packed their bags. To combat this exact danger zone, the HIPTHER Movement: Anti-Quit Running Challenge 2026 was born—a ten-week test of community grit, consistency, and raw discipline running from January 26 to April 5.

While 93 tracked tech and iGaming professionals banded together to log an incredible community total of 16,165 kilometers, a select group competed in the ultra-competitive “Titans” bracket. Among them was George Abela, an iGaming professional who claimed 3rd place overall by hammering out a staggering 670.0 km.

We sat down with George to discover how he balanced data-driven training, full-time industry work, and raising two young children without hitting the dreaded mid-winter wall.

The Blueprint of a Titan: Smart Pacing & The 80/20 Rule

Logging 670 kilometers in just over two months isn’t just about running until your legs give out. For George, securing a podium spot meant leaning heavily into structured, scientific training.

“Consistency is key, in life and in running,” George points out.

Working under the guidance of a local running coach, his regime is highly strategic. He structures his weeks around a strict 6-days-on, 1-day-rest schedule that blends easy runs, speed sessions, and high-intensity tempos. The cornerstone of his longevity? Adhering to the famous 80/20 running principle:

  • 80% of total mileage is kept at a comfortable, easy pace to build aerobic capacity.

  • 20% is reserved for high-intensity, targeted speed work.

But elite discipline also requires elite self-awareness. “Waking up every morning at around 4 AM to go for a run, every season, is the most challenging part, as well as making sure that you listen to your body without burning out,” George says. “There have been times when I skipped or shifted a run simply because I was not feeling well.” He also bolsters his weekly running with 75 minutes of strength training to ensure his body can handle the heavy impact over time.

Joining the Club by Chance, Pushing by Choice

The HIPTHER challenge brought together professional peers from across the tech and iGaming landscapes via Strava. For George, discovering the challenge was a happy accident that quickly turned into a motivational catalyst.

“I joined the challenge by chance. As an active Strava user, I always check monthly challenges, and being an iGaming employee, I thought of joining this one,” he shares.

The digital running club didn’t just reconnect him with former coworkers and introduce him to new industry peers—it unlocked a healthy competitive drive. “I feel quite grateful that I have contributed to the 16,000 km, where at the same time, it gives a purpose to compete and push more when you see the leaderboard.”

Defining Resilience: Waking Up at 4 AM with Two Kids

The “Anti-Quit” ethos means finding a way forward when motivation evaporates. For George, the mental toughness built on the pavement directly feeds back into his life as a father to a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old. Balancing high-mileage training with work and family life is a logistical puzzle, especially during grueling seasonal shifts.

“The biggest struggle is the summer heat, whilst managing to stay on and focused until the end of the day when my two kiddos are around,” George admits.

Yet, instead of viewing his rigorous routine as a separation from family time, he uses it to set an unforgettable example for his children.

“Having my kids around seeing me doing the Sunday long runs, whilst being able to play with them—or go for a cool-down with my 6-year-old—is something I hope that they will remember and treasure for life. Setting up an example of resilience.”

Looking Ahead: Chasing the Top Spot

With the 2026 Anti-Quit Challenge officially in the books, George is already looking toward the future. While he has his eyes on the peak of the podium for the next edition, he maintains a healthy, grounded perspective on his competitive nature.

“I will chase the top spot, but do not want to make it an obsession,” George smiles. “As competitive as I am, I know myself and my body—when to push and when to take a step back. Definitely, I will keep on running until I can, and we’ll see where that lands!”
