BMet opens doors to UK’s first FinTech short course

BMet Launches Pioneering FinTech Course in Birmingham

Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet) is breaking new ground with the introduction of the country’s first-ever FinTech course, actively seeking students to join its inaugural cohort starting in June.

This pioneering Further Education (FE)-led short course is set to roll out over the next two years, with the aim of supporting approximately fifty to sixty new students. The first installment, spanning four months, offers a flexible learning structure that includes self-study, online modules, and on-campus sessions. Designed to provide a comprehensive overview of FinTech, the course encompasses both behavioral and technological aspects and incorporates input from industry experts to meet the demand for ongoing innovation.

Developed in collaboration with partners following the publication of BMet’s FinTech Skills Framework, this course represents a significant milestone in Further Education within Birmingham and the West Midlands.

BMet’s collaboration with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), SuperTech—the UK’s only tech supercluster—and industry experts has resulted in the creation of a sixteen-week program aimed at equipping students with a solid foundation in FinTech concepts and technologies. The curriculum covers the historical context and evolution of FinTech, explores various sectors for opportunities in innovation, and provides insights into the regulatory landscape and compliance strategies. Additionally, it supports career progression and development opportunities for students.

David Gaughan, Head of Employer Services at WMCA, expressed enthusiasm for the new course, recognizing its role in addressing the region’s skills needs. Suzie Branch-Haddow, Vice Principal for External Development at BMet, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential of the region as a major center for FinTech growth and the pivotal role of Further Education in unlocking opportunities for diverse talent.

Jo Griffin, Project and Skills Lead at SuperTech, will be among the specialist lecturers on the course, leveraging insights from SuperTech’s Impact Report, which underscored the significant economic contribution of the FinTech sector in the West Midlands.

Hilary Smyth-Allen, Executive Lead for SuperTech, welcomed the innovative course as a solution to the skills shortage in the FinTech sector and emphasized its role in nurturing talent within the region.

Upon completion of the program, students will receive a certificate recognized by employers within the SuperTech community and beyond, providing a significant boost to their skills and professional development.

Supported by the WMCA, the development of this pioneering program marks a significant step forward in addressing the skills needs of the FinTech industry.
