Most of us have probably left an interview at least once thinking, “I think it went really well.” And then, a few days later, received a rejection.

In reality, the reason isn’t always a lack of experience or knowledge. And a hiring decision is never based solely on years of experience or a well-completed test assignment. It is built step by step, from a combination of many different factors.

And quite often, it’s the less obvious signals that help us understand not only what a person was capable of yesterday or what they’re ready to do today, but also what kind of colleague they will become tomorrow. So today, I’d like to share what RedCore recruiters pay attention to first when reviewing your resume, as well as the key Green and Red Flags.

If Your CV Needs Explaining, It’s Already Losing

A strong resume shouldn’t be an attempt to tell the entire story of your career starting with your very first job. Instead, it should answer one question within 30–60 seconds: “Why are you the right fit for this role?”

Green Flags: A well-structured, concise CV of no more than 1–1.5 pages, where the key information is easy to scan and supported by measurable results. And, of course, a link to your LinkedIn profile, so the recruiter can quickly verify your professional background.

Red Flags: A resume with spelling or grammar mistakes, or one that isn’t written in the language of the vacancy. An overloaded layout filled with excessive, unnecessary information. As well as a career path that raises more questions than it answers, for example, several parallel full-time positions or very frequent job changes with no clear logic behind them.

We see a CV as the first example of your professional communication. Even at this stage, it’s already clear whether a person knows how to work with information, highlight what matters most, and communicate their value, skills that are essential for almost any role.

The Recruiter Isn’t “the First Filter.” They’re Your Guide to an Offer

The biggest mistake you can make is treating the first interview as something you simply have to get through. In reality, it’s your first touchpoint with the company’s culture, its future processes, and the people you’ll be working with every day. And it’s your opportunity to show what it will actually be like to work with you.

Green Flags: A genuine conversation, clear and well-structured answers, real examples from your experience, respectful communication, and a willingness to think through a question even if the answer isn’t immediately obvious.

Red Flags: Joining the interview from a car or while walking outside. Talking a lot without getting to the point. Being overly familiar from the very first moments of the conversation or even worse, trying to dismiss or undermine the recruiter’s questions.

At RedCore, a strong candidate doesn’t necessarily receive a rejection just because their experience or skill set doesn’t perfectly match the requirements of a particular vacancy. If we see strong potential but believe the candidate could create greater impact in another team or function, we’re happy to consider them for an alternative role instead.

When Everyone Has Experience: What Actually Helps To Get the Offer?

By the time you reach the final interview, your professional skills are no longer in question, otherwise, you simply wouldn’t have made it this far. That’s why the conversation goes well beyond technical expertise and soft skills assessment. At this stage, the goal is to understand what will make you stand out: how well you align with the company’s values, how you make decisions, respond to uncertainty, collaborate with others, and take ownership.

Green Flags: Confidence without trying to prove that you know everything. The ability to support your point of view with clear reasoning while acknowledging areas for growth. A willingness to discuss alternative solutions calmly and ask thoughtful questions that demonstrate genuine interest in the role and the business.

Red Flags: Being overly rigid or taking a defensive stance in response to every question. Arguing for the sake of arguing, or acting as though there is only one correct opinion which is your own.

Ultimately, I believe, the biggest Red Flag is trying to be someone you’re not instead of being honest about your experience and your approach to work.

At RedCore, we aren’t looking for “perfect candidates” in the conventional sense. We’re looking for our ideal candidates who share our corporate values. People who never settle for what’s already been achieved, stay focused on delivering results, take ownership, communicate openly, and thrive as team players.

The real Green Flag is being yourself. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself. It will not only increase your chances of getting an offer, but also help you find the role where you’ll be able to unlock your full potential, grow professionally, and build a long-term career.
