Bybit, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has appointed Robert MacDonald as its new Chief Legal & Compliance Officer. With a rich background in regulatory compliance and financial crime, MacDonald’s experience spans both the public sector and traditional finance. His leadership is expected to strengthen Bybit’s commitment to legal integrity and governance.
MacDonald began his career as a barrister specializing in financial crime before transitioning to roles in global institutions, including major asset managers, South Korea’s largest eCommerce company, and crypto exchange Binance. In his new role at Bybit, he will oversee a legal and compliance team tasked with navigating complex regulatory landscapes and maintaining adherence to anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations.
Bybit COO Helen Liu emphasized that compliance is a foundational pillar of the company’s long-term vision. MacDonald himself highlighted the challenge of inconsistent regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions, noting the need for clearer guidelines. He expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead Bybit’s legal and compliance initiatives as the exchange continues its global expansion.
Bybit, founded in 2018, serves over 50 million users and is known for its ultra-fast matching engine, 24/7 customer service, and strong partnerships, including with Formula One’s Oracle Red Bull Racing team.
