Motosumo launches the #TrainForSchools campaign to support education in Kenya

Motosumo is thrilled to announce the launch of its 7th Cycle for Change campaign, titled #TrainForSchools, set to take place from August 19-25, 2024. Most kids begin a new school year in late summer. Our campaign will focus on providing funds for a mobile science lab for Withare Primary School in Kenya. This will benefit 7th to 9th-grade students in the Maasai Mara region. The donation will take place through the Human Practice Foundation (HPF).

Cycle For Change is Motosumo’s flagship fundraising initiative, where Motosumo members and partners come together to pedal for impactful causes. This upcoming campaign will see participants physically and virtually engaging to raise funds for HPF, a Denmark-based NGO dedicated to improving education and livelihoods in regions such as Nepal and Kenya.

The #TrainForSchools campaign kicks off on Monday, August 19, and will run until midnight, Sunday, August 25. Motosumo will donate $1 for every 100 km cycled by its global community during the seven campaign days, whether attending live or on-demand cycling classes. The goal is to reach 150,000 km, equaling a total donation of $1,500.

HPF, founded in 2014, operates on a unique 100% donation model. A group of visionary philanthropists, known as the Founding Partners, fully covers the organization’s daily administrative costs. This ensures that every dollar donated goes directly to project implementation, providing complete transparency and maximum impact.

Maja Buchhave Breiter, Project and Stakeholder Manager at HPF, highlighted the unique donation model and the campaign’s impact: “We are thankful to receive support from Motosumo through their #TrainForSchools campaign, which will significantly enhance science education for the Withare Primary School students, giving them the tools and opportunities they deserve to succeed. Our donation model ensures that all funds raised go directly to projects like the mobile science lab.”

Why Kenya?

While one of the more developed Sub-Saharan African countries, Kenya faces severe educational disparities, particularly between urban and rural areas. In rural regions, almost 40% of the population lives in poverty, which has devastating effects on education. Only around 50% of students make it to the 4th grade; in the poorest areas, only 28% achieve the expected literacy and numeracy skills.

Many schools in these regions lack basic facilities, and teachers often need more training. The result is a vicious cycle of poor education and limited job opportunities, perpetuating poverty within these communities. The Maasai Mara region, in particular, is one of the poorest in Kenya, with an educational sector in dire need of support.

Human Practice Foundation’s Holistic Approach

HPF’s Child Empowerment Model is designed to tackle these educational challenges. By placing children at the center of their interventions, HPF aims to provide the quality education necessary for children to take control of their futures. Their holistic approach includes improving educational infrastructure, supporting child development activities, training teachers, and building management capacity within schools.

Withare Primary School

Withare Primary School, located in the Maasai Mara region, suffers from a lack of educational infrastructure. The funds raised through the #TrainForSchools campaign will equip the school with a mobile science lab, enhancing the quality of science education and providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

Kresten Juel Jensen, CEO of Motosumo, emphasized the significance of such targeted donations: “This specific donation of a mobile science lab to Withare Primary School will make a tangible difference for the students. In regions where basic educational needs are not a given, our initiative is designed to ensure that every pedal stroke contributes to a brighter future for children in need.”
