AI enhances Zambia’s tax collection, compliance

Zambia reports that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has enhanced its tax revenue collection capacity by 60% over the last two years.

Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, announced this significant boost in revenue collection during an AI lecture in the capital, Lusaka.

“AI has equipped the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) with more tools to enhance revenue collection and tax compliance,” Mutati stated during his speech on Tuesday.

At the beginning of 2024, the ZRA announced that it had collected K100.6 billion (US$3.89 billion) in taxes, marking the highest total to date.

Speaking at the same event in Lusaka, ZRA Commissioner General Dingani Banda noted that AI has significantly improved fraud detection.

“ZRA can now analyze importers and exporters online, detecting fraud faster than humans,” Banda said.
