AI to surpass human intelligence by 2026, says Elon Musk

CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has predicted artificial intelligence (AI) surpassing human intelligence could emerge as early as this year or by 2026.

Elon Musk told the CEO at Norges Bank Investment Management, Nicolai Tangen, that the capabilities of AI are constrained by electricity availability.

“If you define artificial general intelligence (AGI) as smarter than the smartest human, I think it is probably next year, within two years,” said Musk.

Musk said that training for the latest version of his xAI chatbot, Grok, will begin next month. He cited the absence of an advanced chip as a constraint on training Grok’s version 2 model.

Musk added training the Grok 2 model utilised around 20,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, with future iterations like Grok 3 requiring 100,000 of these chips. Musk highlighted the significance of chip shortages as a major obstacle in AI development but stressed electricity supply will become crucial in the coming years.

xAI was founded by Musk as a competitor to OpenAI. Last month, the Tesla CEO filed a lawsuit against OpenAI accusing the company of abandoning its initial mission statement by pursuing commercial success, instead of striving to benefit humanity.

In a blog post, OpenAI denied the accusations, stating that the company advances its mission by building widely available beneficial tools.

“We are making our technology broadly usable in ways that empower people and improve their daily lives, including via open-source contributions. We provide broad access to today’s most powerful AI, including a free version that hundreds of millions of people use every day,” said OpenAI.
