DNV, a prominent classification society, has issued its inaugural cyber-security approval for maritime digital solutions, just before the implementation of comprehensive industrywide regulations.
Kongsberg Digital emerges as the pioneer in securing this approval, being the first recipient of DNV’s endorsement for its Vessel Insight vessel-to-cloud data collection system, ensuring protection against cyber threats in accordance with the new unified requirements set forth by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
DNV has renewed the data collection infrastructure D-INF type-approval for Vessel Insight to include cyber security level SP1, thereby ensuring compliance with IACS UR E27, which addresses the cyber resilience of onboard systems and equipment.
With IACS UR E27 set to become mandatory for classed vessels commencing construction on or after July 1, 2024, DNV’s endorsement signifies a significant step forward for the maritime industry in bolstering cyber security within digitalization solutions.
Although Kongsberg Digital initially obtained D-INF type-approval and cyber security level SP1 for Vessel Insight in 2022, the impending IACS UR E27 requirements necessitated recertification to ensure continued compliance.
According to Qitao Gan, DNV’s principal engineer for digital ship systems, this recertification process was essential to ensure that the vessel-to-shore solution meets the forthcoming IACS UR E27 requirements, thus facilitating wider acceptance by key stakeholders, including vessel owners, builders, and third-party verifiers.
As digitalization gains momentum in the maritime sector, the reliance on secure data collected from onboard systems becomes increasingly critical, underscoring the importance of compliance with classed standards and security protocols.
Anders Bryhni, Vice President for Maritime Products at Kongsberg Digital, emphasized the significance of IACS E27 as a notable enhancement in cyber security compared to previous regulations. He highlighted that with Vessel Insight now assessed and approved for these rules, individual vessels can achieve compliance with minimal audits from class societies, streamlining the regulatory process for industry stakeholders.
