Deutsche Bank to explore asset tokenisation applications as part of MAS’ Project Guardian

Deutsche Bank Joins MAS’ Project Guardian to Explore DeFi and Asset Tokenization

Deutsche Bank has announced its participation in Project Guardian, a multi-year initiative spearheaded by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) aimed at exploring the realms of decentralized finance (DeFi) and asset tokenization within global financial markets.

Project Guardian, initiated by MAS in May 2022, focuses on developing and piloting various use cases for tokenization across four key areas: interoperable networks, independent trust anchors, institutional-grade DeFi protocols, and the utilization of tokenized deposits issued by deposit-taking institutions on public blockchains.

The involvement of Deutsche Bank adds significant momentum to the project, joining other notable participants such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK, the Financial Services Agency of Japan (FSA), and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), who announced their participation in October of the previous year.

Deutsche Bank’s role in Project Guardian will be in contributing to the project’s asset and wealth management workstream. The bank aims to test an open and interoperable blockchain platform tailored to service tokenized and digital funds. Additionally, Deutsche Bank plans to propose new protocol standards and best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of asset tokenization.

Mike Clarke, Global Head of Securities Services Product Management at Deutsche Bank, expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting the potential benefits of technology and collaboration for clients and the broader industry.

As part of its exploration, Deutsche Bank will collaborate with Interop Labs, the developer of the Axelar network, and Memento Blockchain, a blockchain services startup. Notably, Deutsche Bank had previously collaborated with Memento Blockchain to deliver the Project Digital Assets Management Access 1 (DAMA) proof-of-concept, partially funded by a grant from MAS.

Boon-Hiong Chan, Asia Pacific Head of Securities and Technology Advocacy and Industry Applied Innovation at Deutsche Bank, has been appointed as the lead for the bank’s involvement in Project Guardian. While the exact timeline for future initiatives, such as DAMA 2, remains undisclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant step forward in exploring the potential of asset tokenization and DeFi within the financial industry.
