IT expert tasks FG on implementing AI governance framework

Victor Haruna-Francis, a UK-based AI governance advocate, has urged the Nigerian government to implement a comprehensive AI governance framework.

In a recent interview, Haruna-Francis emphasized the need for such a framework to address governance issues, mitigate risks, and protect human rights and privacy. He pointed out that while AI and data drive economic growth, their ethical and responsible use is crucial. He stressed the importance of guidelines and standards to regulate AI deployment, ensuring technological advancements do not compromise human values and fundamental rights.

Haruna-Francis noted the significant contributions of AI to national and global economies, but also warned about the potential threats and risks associated with its proliferation. He advocated for prioritizing responsible use, transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI deployment. Highlighting the World Bank’s Digital Economy for Africa initiative, he projected that by 2030, individuals, businesses, and governments in Africa will be digitally enabled. He called for African nations to move beyond developing national AI strategies to enacting robust governance frameworks to enhance national security, human rights, and privacy.
