PayPal has announced the appointment of Srini Venkatesan as its new Chief Technology Officer, effective June 24.
Venkatesan will oversee the technological strategy and execution across the entire PayPal ecosystem, which includes areas such as AI and machine learning, product engineering, analytics, data science, information security, and infrastructure operations.
With a 30-year background in fintech, Venkatesan brings extensive experience to his new role. Before joining PayPal, he served at Walmart Global Tech, leading the U.S. omni and platforms technology unit. His previous roles include Vice President at Yahoo, CTO at StubHub, and several director positions at eBay. His expertise in technology, digital transformation, and AI personalization is highly valued, as noted by PayPal’s president and CEO, Alex Chriss.
Venkatesan succeeds Archie Deskus, who is leaving the company after a two-year stint as CTO. In his new role, Venkatesan aims to utilize his vast experience to enhance how PayPal users discover, shop, and buy, focusing on personalizing the shopping experience.
This leadership transition is part of a broader organizational change at PayPal, which also includes a workforce reduction of about 9% or approximately 2,500 positions in 2024, as the company aims to streamline its operations.
