Despite buzz, generative AI tools such as ChatGPT see minimal daily use, survey finds

A survey encompassing 12,000 participants across six countries revealed that although many are familiar with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools like ChatGPT, regular usage remains relatively low.

Since OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT in November 2022, generative AI has been a focal point in technology discourse, attracting significant attention for its capabilities. Despite the excitement surrounding these new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, a recent survey suggests that only a small fraction of individuals regularly utilize AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Conducted by the Reuters Institute and Oxford University, the survey spanned six countries, including France, Denmark, and the UK, aiming to gauge attitudes towards the adoption of GenAI models.

The results indicate that a minority of respondents use ChatGPT on a daily basis, with even fewer incorporating other generative AI tools like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot into their routines.

Public Awareness of AI Tools

Although a majority of respondents reported awareness of popular AI tools, ChatGPT emerged as the most recognized, with 61% of Danish and 58% of UK respondents indicating familiarity with it. In contrast, other tools like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot had lower recognition rates, with only 15% to 25% awareness among respondents.

Moreover, more specialized AI tools like Midjourney and Perplexity had minimal recognition among the general public. Interestingly, respondents were not more likely to be aware of AI products from their own country compared to internationally popular tools like ChatGPT.

Usage Patterns of AI Tools

ChatGPT emerged as the most commonly used AI tool across the surveyed countries, albeit with relatively low usage frequency. For instance, only 2% of respondents in France and the UK reported using ChatGPT daily, and usage of other AI tools was even less frequent. Notably, no UK respondents reported daily usage of Google Gemini.

The study revealed higher usage rates for large language models (LLMs) in the US, with 7% of individuals using ChatGPT daily and 11% using it weekly. However, overall usage frequency remains low across all age groups.

Impact of Generative AI

Most survey participants anticipate that generative AI will significantly influence various sectors within the next five years. The majority believe it will have a major impact on search and social media companies (72%), followed by the news media (66%) and scientific work (also 66%).

Furthermore, respondents expect generative AI to significantly affect industries such as healthcare and finance (59% each), the military (56%), and government (53%). Despite these anticipated impacts, nearly half of those surveyed foresee a potential negative effect on society overall, although most expect some improvement in their personal lives due to generative AI advancements.
