Reddit shares jump after OpenAI ChatGPT deal

Reddit’s stock surged by more than 10% following the announcement of a partnership with the artificial intelligence startup OpenAI. This collaboration entails granting OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, access to Reddit content, as well as integrating AI-powered features into the social media platform.

This move by Reddit underscores its efforts to diversify its revenue streams beyond advertising. However, it comes amidst a backdrop of increasing legal challenges from copyright owners regarding the use of their content by AI firms.

Sony, the world’s largest music publisher, recently sent inquiries to Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, seeking clarification on whether their songs were used in the development of AI systems. Responses from these companies are pending, while OpenAI has struck agreements with various publishers, including the Associated Press and the Financial Times.

In recent months, OpenAI has been active in securing deals with publishers, while Google announced a partnership allowing access to Reddit data to train its AI models back in February.

The legal landscape surrounding the use of copyrighted content by AI tools is murky, with debates around copyright infringement versus fair use and “temporary copying” exceptions. This issue is currently being litigated in the US, with cases involving prominent figures like George RR Martin, Sarah Silverman, and the New York Times.

Additionally, OpenAI introduced the latest iteration of its technology, GPT-4o, which powers ChatGPT. This upgraded version boasts improved speed and conversational abilities, along with capabilities to read and discuss images, translate languages, and identify emotions from visual cues. It also features memory for recalling previous prompts, marking a significant advancement in AI technology integration.
