University of Maryland Launches Interdisciplinary Institute on Artificial Intelligence

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), concepts like ethics, equity, and responsibility hold significant importance. At the University of Maryland (UMD), these principles are deeply ingrained as the institution gears up to establish its Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute.

While AI presents immense potential for innovation, it also carries the risk of causing harm.

“We’ve already observed instances of errors in image processing software, particularly concerning different demographic groups. For instance, it often misinterprets people of color due to inadequate training data,” noted Pines.

Looking ahead, UMD plans to mandate AI courses for all students, aiming to cultivate problem-solving skills and a sense of civic responsibility.

“Our aim is to equip students with the necessary tools and competencies to tackle real-world challenges while also instilling a strong sense of social responsibility. Ultimately, we seek to harness AI for the betterment of society,” emphasized Pines.

Moreover, the institute’s scope extends beyond scientific domains.

“Regardless of one’s academic background—be it English literature, history, or art—AI intersects with various disciplines, offering numerous avenues for exploration,” highlighted Tom Goldstein, Director of UMD’s Center for Machine Learning.
