Miami-Dade is strategically planning its approach to artificial intelligence (AI)

In July of last year, Miami-Dade County initiated research into artificial intelligence (AI), culminating in a comprehensive report outlining its objectives and guidelines.

The report emphasizes a balanced and people-centric approach, prioritizing fairness, data privacy, security, and opportunities for the county’s workforce in the evolving landscape of AI use within government operations.

Commissioner Eileen Higgins spearheaded the resolution, seeking insights into how AI might impact county employment. While studies offer conflicting perspectives on whether AI will create or eliminate jobs, there is consensus that it will significantly influence the future workforce.

Concerns about AI’s intrusion into daily life are widespread, with many expressing apprehension about loss of control. This fear has been depicted in various forms of media over the years, underscoring the need for ethical and transparent AI deployment.

Miami-Dade’s AI document serves as a strategic blueprint to ensure the secure, ethical, and effective utilization of AI technologies across county government. It aims to transform services and governance through responsible AI implementation while maintaining transparency and accountability.

The county commission unanimously endorsed the report, which outlines seven guiding objectives:

  1. Ethical AI: Develop and deploy AI systems that are fair and inclusive, with regular audits to ensure ethical use.
  2. Transparency and Accountability: Ensure transparency in AI decision-making processes and foster public trust.
  3. Data Privacy and Security: Adhere to data privacy standards and undergo regular security assessments.
  4. Data Integrity: Prioritize the governance and preparation of datasets to fuel high-quality AI solutions.
  5. Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate with experts, specialists, and community partners for enriched AI design and implementation.
  6. Beta Testing and Continuous Evaluation: Advocate for small-scale beta projects and continuous evaluation to ensure performance and accuracy.
  7. Human-AI Collaboration: Integrate AI technologies to enhance the employee and end user experience, focusing on augmenting human work rather than replacing it.

Overall, the report represents a transparent framework for responsibly leveraging AI to enhance county services and governance, reflecting a commitment to ethical practices and collaboration in AI development and deployment.
